Former Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Alhaji Bello Lafiaji, and his Personal Assistant, Usman Amali, were this morning arraigned before a Lagos High Court on a five-count charge of corrupt enrichment.
Former Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Alhaji Bello Lafiaji, and his Personal Assistant, Usman Amali, were this morning arraigned before a Lagos High Court on a five-count charge of corrupt enrichment.
In the suit filed before the court by Ayobami Adepoju, a legal officer with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Lafiaji and Amali in November 2005 or thereabout, in Lagos being public officers to wit, chairman of NDLEA and Special Assistant to the chairman of NDLEA respectively, in the discharge of their duties conspired within themselves to use their offices to confer corrupt advantage upon themselves.
This was by unlawfully receiving from Ikenna Onochie, a suspect in the NDLEA, the sum of 168,300 Euros being exhibit seized from Ikenna Onochie in order to release him and his vehicles from NDLEA custody.
The two accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. Consequently, their counsel, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan urged the court to grant them bail.
The ICPC prosecutor, while not opposing their bail, urged the court to impose tough conditions for bail so that the accused persons would be compelled to come back and face trail.
As at the time of filling this report, the bail application was still on.
