Lagos Empowers Fishing Communities

Three fishing communities in remote areas of Lagos State have been given deep freezers, stabilisers and generators by the state government, to help them preserve their catch.

Three fishing communities in remote areas of Lagos State have been given deep freezers, stabilisers and generators by the state government, to help them preserve their catch.

The communities are Ikoikin in Epe, Igbalu in Ikorodu and Yovoyan in Badagry area of Lagos.

The Ministry of Rural Development donated the equipment to the fishing communities recently. Each community got two giant deep freezers, one 3.8 KVA generator and a 2000 watts stabiliser.

According to the Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun, the empowerment was in line with the promise Governor Babatunde Fashola made during his electoral campaigns.

'Fashola directed that every serving commissioner must visit all projects awarded under his ministy, but for us, we thought it fit not only to visit the projects but the people.

'We put this project across to the governor and he approved that we must come to assist you to preserve your fishes. He has not only given you deep freezers, but attached generators to them to make your fish remain fresh," he said.

The commissioner said that in no distant time, government will deliver the dividends of democracy to other communities by giving them tools to aid their occupation, adding that 'we will stay with you in your needs."

Balogun stated that the benefiting communities were the poorest of the poor because they reside in areas where electricity has not been installed, adding, 'we are working on rural electrification in the areas."

Representative of the communities, Mr. Femi Osasanya, commended the state government for the gesture.
