At least 15 persons, mostly students, lost their lives on Saturday in a fatal auto crash at Abudu in the Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
At least 15 persons, mostly students, lost their lives on Saturday in a fatal auto crash at Abudu in the Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to an eyewitness, the accident, which claimed the lives of nine males and six females in their prime, occurred about 10 o' clock in the morning.
Narrating the incident to Sunday Sun on phone, the eyewitness said the accident involved two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 368 AYB and another one with an unidentified registration number.
Already 17 people who were wounded in the accident are receiving medical attention at the Delta state government owned Central Hospital, Agbor where the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan had already gone to see the victims. The governor who expressed shock at the development instructed the state commissioner for Health, Dr.Joseph Otumara to monitor the progress of the victims recovery .
Sunday Sun gathered that on getting to the hospital and seeing the victims, Dr Uduaghan moved with pity, assured the victims of adequate financial support and promising that the Delta state government would pick-up the medical bills of the victims . The source further disclosed that the governor, a medical doctor himself also examined the victims alongside the medical team of the Agbor Central Hospital.
It was further revealed that the accident was caused by the Toyota Hiace bus which was traveling from Benin to Onitsha and which had a tire burst, skidded off the road and rammed into the vehicle conveying the students on excursion to Benin City, Edo state.
Confirming the incident to Sunday Sun, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)official in Delta, Mr. Olawusi, however, said it was only 14 people that died in the accident and that they have been deposited in the morgue.
