Military operations may have commenced in parts of Rivers State as the Federal Government carries through its threat to sack militants from the Niger Delta region. Sources hinted on Thursday night that an air assault on suspected camps of militants in the Cawthorn Channel area began earlier in the day.

The operations took off just as the police killed two suspected armed robbers and arrested five others in Port Harcourt.
It was gathered that Air Force personnel moved into the area early on Thursday and launched the assault on the area that is generally suspected to house many militant camps.
It was, however, not clear whether there were casualties as at the time of filing this report.

However, dependable sources hinted that the raid must take some time. When contacted, the spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Rivers State, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, told Daily Sun in telephone interview that he was yet to get details of the exercise. 'Since you said so, it means that the operation is on-going which means that we are yet to have details," he said.

Meanwhile, anti-crime policemen felled two suspected armed robbers at the Njemanze area of Diobu, Port Harcourt and arrested five others at the Elekahia area of the capital city.
Police Public Relation Officer, Mrs Rita Inoma-Abbey (DSP), told Daily Sun that the robbers had attacked early commuters and the police had to move in during which the two robbers were gunned down and one revolver recovered.
