Tragedy struck on Tuesday night when suspected assassins raided the residence of a senior lecturer in the History Department of Benue State University, Dr. David Yongo and shot his wife to death leaving one of his children seriously injured.

The deceased, Mrs. Laurette Yongo, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on hearing the deafening sounds of the sporadic shooting by the suspected hired assassins held two of her children and took off for safety but was caught down by the killers who were strategically positioned while one of her children was shot on the ankle.

The history lecturer, who married Lauretta in 2002, could not explain why his wife life was taken by the gun wielding men, disclosed that it was when the sounds of the gun shots had subsided that he came out from his hiding place with his daughter and saw two of his children and members of his neighbourhood wailing that, he realized something serious must have happened to his wife.

The bereaved lecturer told Daily Sun at the Federal Medical Centre where his wife's remains had been deposited and where his injured three year-old-son was being treated said, ‘I am the target. They actually came to eliminate me because when they mistakenly went to another lecturer's house and they discovered he was not their target they stormed my residence and started firing intensely. When they came to my house, they laid siege and fired sporadically for so many minutes. It was in the midst of the firing, that my wife and children ran out," he explained.

'She was dear to me; dear to my heart. Suddenly someone we were sharing same bed is no more, how can you explain that. They have created a deep wound in my heart, one that I will remain to live with all the days of my life," he said in tears holding his wounded boy on his lap.
It was the police that took away the corpse of his wife to the Federal Medical Centre, noting that it was too premature to make any accusation. The late Mrs Yongo was until her death a secondary school teacher at the Government Model School, Makurdi.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sam Jinadu, could not be reached as his phone kept ringing without response.
