The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Emmanuel Chukwuma has decried the current practice in Nigerian banks where female staff are given targets to meet or they are sacked, saying that it expose the young ladies to prostitution.

The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Emmanuel Chukwuma has decried the current practice in Nigerian banks where female staff are given targets to meet or they are sacked, saying that it expose the young ladies to prostitution.

Consequently, he had called on the apex supervising bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to do something urgently to curb the practice.

Speaking on the issue which also formed part of the communiqué of the Third Session of the thirteenth synod of the Diocese which ended yesterday at St. Peter's Church Ogbete, Chukwuma said it was a wrong practice to put the female staff of the banks, including married women, in such difficult position that would lead them into sexual immorality.

Giving example of a lady who approached him in tears that she was about losing her job because of the target given to her and which she could not meet because she refused to yield to sexual advances of men who are in position to raise such amount of money, he said the church condemns in strong terms such practices and would want CBN to put a stop to it.

Meanwhile, in a 16-point communiqué, the synod took exception to the increasing rate of polygamy in the church and directed the clergy to stop any member involved from partaking in Holy Communion as enshrined in the constitution of the church.

The synod also alligned itself with goals of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) which it said would greatly benefit the church of Nigerian Anglican Communion and the entire Christian faith.
On the state of the nation, the communiqué reads in part: 'The Synod is happy that a high powered committee has been set up to review our electoral system and make recommendations.
The Synod recommends that the 50 political parties should be reduced to maximum of the provision made for independent candidates.

'Elections should be organized in such a way that all petitions arising from the elections would have been determined before the inauguration of the new administration. It is also resolved by this Synod that the constitution should be amended so that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and not state electoral commissions can conduct local government election.

'The Synod welcomes the probe of the power sector by the House of Representatives and hopes that it will afford the Yar'Adua administration the opportunity to prove its seriousness to fight corruption. The Synod also appreciates the proposed declaration of state of emergency in the power sector next month by the federal government.

'The Synod condemns the proliferation of arms in the country and urges the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive steps to tackle this unfortunate development that poses great threat to our national security.
'The government must resolve the issues of social inequalities and effectively police our border to curtail and eliminate this unwholesome development.
