The congress of the Association of Resident Doctors, National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi (NOHI) branch, has expressed their displeasure with the parlous state and abject condition of the hospital.
The doctors, who recently aired their feeling by way of a protest match round the expansive hospital premises, complained that patients on admission and even outpatients are suffering untold hardship. 'There is lack of mosquito nets for the wards, no implants for patient that need them, no privacy in consulting rooms due to lack of infrastructure, female wards are without window blinds and a whole lot of other inadequacies," Dr J. I. Ojodu, president of the association said.
Ojodu explained that the lack of facilities in the hospital was causing a lot of problems for them while attending to the patients. He also hinted at molestation from patients who sometimes ask for refunds of payments which never happened.
He further explained that the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr Gbolahan Adebule, has been approached a number of times with these issues without improvement.
However, reacting to the development, the CMD condemned the protest, saying the doctors did wrong by abandoning their patients in the ward and taking to the streets.
According to Adedule, 'the protest is not for lack of facilities, it is just politically motivated. Notices have been pasted since February to inform people about increment in charges in the hospital, which have not yet been carried out. We have been using what we have to buy what we need. What we get from patients don't total to N20 million per month and the average cost of runing this hospital is about N30 million."
Continuing, he said, 'this time last year we were owing contractors one year in arrears but today it has reduced to about four months which means we made progress.
'The government's interested in us and is providing us a large sum of money to buy equipment and improve on infrastructure in about another one or two months. The expected money, according to him, is a whopping N500 million and N200 million respectively."
