A 29 year-old female suspect, Enaruna Silvia Rosemary, has been nabbed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for inserting a wrap of cocaine in her vagina and six wraps in her anus.
Silvia was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos for ingesting 38 wraps of cocaine last Friday.
Silvia who has been living in Torino, Italy for about ten years was found to be in unlawful possession of substances that tested positive for cocaine during screening of passengers on an Alitalia flight from Lagos to Milan at the airport.
During interrogation, Silvia revealed that she got involved in the illicit act because of her love for her daughter.
According to the suspect, her ten years marriage to an Italian man is almost on the verge of collapse. Silvia said that she needed to secure the permission of the court in Italy to take custody of her only child, a six year old daughter who is at present being taken care of by her sister in-law.
'My lawyer told me to get a decent accommodation and a stable job which is a precondition for my child to be released to me to take care of. I am missing her so much. It was in the process of trying to do this that I entered into this problem, " Silvia lamented.
She narrated how her sponsor gave her ten thousand Euros and directed her to a man in Cotonou, Benin Republic who will sell the drugs to her. Although she said this is her first time of trafficking narcotic drugs, the agreement she had with her sponsors was to sell the drug in Italy and pay back the ten thousand Euros with interest of three thousand and have whatever balance that may be left.
Commenting on the arrest, the NDLEA Assistant Commander in charge of Operations and Investigation at the airport, Alhaji Idris Bello said that her case is unique and shows a high level of desperation.
He however expressed optimism that the Agency is helping to stop drug traffickers thereby enhancing the image of the country internationally.
According to Bello, 'the previous week alone we arrested six suspected drug couriers. One was arrested in connection with unlawful exportation of 7.6 kilogrammes of cannabis to China while five others including Silvia were caught for drug ingestion". Other suspects caught last week are Ukah Okorie, 33, Kuba Protus, 41, Christian Chukwuma Agbo, 34, Johnson Morris, 37 and Okpalanne Andrew Emeka, 27. Okorie, Okpalanne and Johnson were arrested on Wednesday June 4, 2008 with 7.6 kilogrammes of cannabis, 113 wraps of cocaine weighing 2.4 kilogrammes and 75 wraps of cocaine whose final weight is yet to be determined.
