Son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Gbenga, and his estranged wife, Moji, have agreed to settle their divorce case out of court.
Already, both parties in the divorce suit have filed their terms of settlement before the trial judge, Justice Williams Dawodu of Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja.
Although, the court is yet to pronounce on the details of the terms reached by the couple, the latest development, according to an informed source, was to forestall further exposure of messy details of the marriage, which might lead to further embarrassment to the families of the couple.
As part of the move to avoid further embarrassment, Obasanjo has withdrawn his amendment to the cross-petition, which contains unprintable accusation against the wife, including the allegation that she slept with his father.
The wife, on her part, has withdrawn her preliminary objections to the amendment.
However, both the original petition and the cross-petition filed by the couple are still pending before the court. Explaining to the court the extent of peace initiatives so far made in the matter, counsel to the wife, Helen Ovonren, said series of meetings had been held between parties since the last adjourned date, while blaming journalists for the escalation of the crisis through negative publicity.
Counsel to the husband, Emunako Addeh, confirmed the move to resolve the matter out of court.
Justice Dawodu commended the parties for the steps taken so far in the matter and fixed July 1, 2008 for the determination of the terms of settlement.
