IGP to re-organize SFU…Officers above 3 years to go

Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has mapped out a plan to re-organize Special Fraud Unit (SFU) for efficiency and professionalism. A source at the unit in Lagos told Daily Sun that officers who have served over three years in the unit and those unfit to be there are to be removed. Legal/Prosecution and Info-Tech Sections, according to the source, are also underway.

The Legal/Prosecution Section would cater for the high level cases being investigated and some suits filed against police actions in view of the exigencies of investigation and the constitutional requirement of speedy arraignment of accused persons as early as practicable," the source said.
'The Police Force felt it would be expedient that suspects are taken to court promptly while the bureaucratic protocols follow."

Investigations reveal that it takes at least eight weeks for any legal advice from Alagbon Annex to reach the SFU. But all that would be a thing of the past after the legal section has been established.
'The authority wants a speedy administration of criminal justice as the witnesses and suspects, if on bail, may have gone far from reach, which may defeat the end of justice," the source noted.
Prosecution, the source added, has always been the ultimate crown of investigation, while it remained the indices by which police successful investigations are measured.

An Info-Tech Section to be established would take care of effective E-Policing outfit, which would link the unit with modern way of dealing with crime.
After its creation, all officers and men of the unit would undergo training on computer and Information Technology.

Meanwhile, a building at SFU, Milverton Street, Ikoyi, has been earmarked for library which would be filled with books and computers.
A new generation bank recently donated computers worth millions of naira to the unit.
