Vice presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC) in the 2007 election, Senator Ben Ndii Obi, has said that moving Nigeria forward at its present condition would be suicidal as the nation is on the precipice.
Obi told Daily Sun in an exclusive interview that there was nothing to celebrate at the federal level as according to him, all that the government of the day has given to Nigerians after one year in office was darkness.
The anti-third term bid protagonist stressed that what Nigeria needs now was for it to be rescued from the precipice, taken back to the starting block.
He described the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration as visionless and without focus.
According to him, until a true free and fair election produced a leadership for the country, Nigeria would continue to witness darkness.
Asked to assess the one year of the new regime, Obi said: 'Well, I do not see anything to celebrate here particularly at the federal level. Are you celebrating darkness? Are you celebrating go-slow or what? Are you celebrating poverty, agony, deprivation and such things? I believe it has been one year of planlessness, focuslessness, complete standstill of governance. And like I always say, the reason for that is obvious, in a deaconry you don't steal people's mandate, because the people, are part of the stimulus.
Without them, you can't move the nation forward. In any case, the idea of moving the nation forward is a very delicate one now, because the nation is on the precipice, and moving it forward is running the nation into a pit. So, the state we have found ourselves now is to arrest the nation from that precipice and pull it back. Pull it back to the starting block, and then take-off from there.
The AC presidential running mate, however, believed some states could celebrate. He cited Anambra as example: 'Anambra State can celebrate, Celebrate because accountability, transparency, focus, sound vision of the man in charge of the place. When he started, people said he was slow, but you could see he is a man who has a chat and I've been talking to people since I came and sampling their opinion on how they feel about the administration of Peter Obi and the answer is satisfactory and they are happy with him and they believe that before his tenure come to a close, he would have improved the state of Anambra State tremendously.
By the time you know it, but the time his tenure is over, the roads he would have put in place, combined with that of his predecessor in office, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, we would have at least made the issue of roads in Anambra State a matter of absolute success."
