Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless while property worth millions of naira were also destroyed following a rainstorm that wreacked havoc in some towns in Ondo state.
Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless while property worth millions of naira were also destroyed following a rainstorm that wreacked havoc in some towns in Ondo state.
The affected towns are, Ikare-Akoko and Ikaram Akoko in Akoko North East Local Government; Ore, in Odigbo Local Government and Okitipupa, in Okitipupa Local Government.
In Ikare Akoko the rain in reared its ugly head twice, forcing the affected victims to seek refuge intheir friends and relations' homes.
The latest one occurred two weeks ago, in Ikare Akoko, with house roofs blown off following a whirlwind that accompanied the down pour, which started in the early morning.
No fewer than 35 houses were affected in the rain disaster. The affected areas are, Okoju, Okeruwa, Odeyare and Iku, all in Ikare town.
Most of the houses affected were residential, while a church and mosque were also destroyed in the early morning storm in Ikare metropolis.
Also in Ikaram town, over 20 houses were destroyed. The victims were seen salvaging some of their belongings from the damaged buildings when Daily Sun visited the areas.
In Ore town over 40 houses were affected by the rainstorm, while the property of the affected victims littered the scene.
The situation is the same in Okitipupa, as no fewer than 40 houses were destroyed by the rainstorm. The affected victims are seeking refuge in churches, mosques, their relations' houses
Most of the victims of the rainstorm described the rainstorm as devastating calamity.
They, however, called on the government to come to their aid, lamenting that the high cost of building materials would force most of them to abandon their ravaged homes, except the government comes out with substantive assistance.
Meanwhile, the state deputy governor, Otunba Omolade Oluwateru ,who inspected the affected areas, sympathized with the victims.
He, however, assured the affected victims that the state government would as a matter of urgency, send relief materials and cash cushion the effect of the sudden disasters
He also stated that the state government would mandate the local government councils in the affected areas to quickly come to the victims' aid.
