Another building has collapsed in Ikorodu Lagos, killing two. They were identified as Ogbonna Nwankwo and Raphael Nwite. The three-storey building, located at Eyita area, collapsed in the early hours of yesterday.
It was gathered that at least one person is still trapped in the debris. According to sources, some prospective tenants were to have packed into the building on Tuesday but because of the non-receipt of keys to the doors, they were unable to access the building. Daily Sun gathered that only the family of the Nwankwo lived on the third floor of the house.
The family head, Mr Emeka Nwankwo, his wife Nneoma Nwankwo, are said to be lying unconscious at a hospital in the town, while their two-year- old daughter, Chisom, was rescued from the wreckage unscathed. Another survivor, Sunday Nweke, was said to have been pulled out of the debris by 9 a.m, by rescue workers.
'My brother is still unconscious, but his two-year-old daughter is safe. Also, Sunday Nweke, who is serving my brother as an apprentice, is still in the hospital. My brother owns a boutique shop," Onyebuchi Nwankwo told Daily Sun.
Oba of Ikorodu, Oba Oyefusi, who was one of the early callers to the scene, accused the Ikorodu Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Waheed Omokorodu, who was also present of negligence, saying that if he had done what he ought to do, the incident would have been averted.
On his part, the Local Government Chairman said that before the accident, building inspectors had warned that the building could not stand the test of time, adding that the owner of the house, who is presently at large, supervised the construction of the building himself.
