Exams leakage scandal rocks WAEC * Students procure each question paper with N5,000


FOR as low as N5000, students sitting for the on-going West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) can procure a question paper, whatever the subject.

LAGOS: FOR as low as N5000, students sitting for the on-going West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) can procure a question paper, whatever the subject. The price varies from source of procurement to the bargaining power of the buyer.


The exam is into its sixth week today having commenced on April 4 with practical exams in Clothing & Textiles and Arabic (Oral).


It is scheduled to end on June 8 with Clerical Office Duties 2 (Essay) and Clerical Office Duties 1 (Objective).


Vanguard reporters acting on a tip-off were able to procure some of the papers last week.


These are: Christian Religious Knowledge scheduled for Tuesday, May 24; and Government (Essay) slated for Monday, May 23.


A contact procured the papers from a source.


It was gathered that students were pooling resources together in some schools to get as many question papers as they could. In some cases, students were said to have raised N50,000 or more to buy the papers which are practically openly sold in several parts of Lagos.


So far, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) which is conducting the examination has not said anything.


Several efforts in the past to curb examination malpractices have yielded little or no success.


Leakage of the WAEC papers reached its height in the late 70s costing the then WAEC boss, Dr. Vincent Ikechukwu, his job.
