FG sacks Customs Comptroller General

Comptroller General of Customs and Excise, Mr Buba Gyang was on Tuesday sacked by the Federal Government, after months of swimming in troubled waters.

Comptroller General of Customs and Excise, Mr Buba Gyang was on Tuesday sacked by the Federal Government, after months of swimming in troubled waters.

Presidency sources said Hamman Bello Ahmed has been appointed to replace Gyan as acting Comptroller General.
Even as news of the sack is yet to be officially released, more trouble appears waiting for Gyang in the House of Representatives as its committee on Customs and Excise has begun his probe.

The former Comptroller General was invited by the House over petition that he committed the sum of N500million to purchase Federal Government houses and allegedly shared them among some top echelon of Customs.

Also, he was alleged to have mismanaged money meant for the welfare of officers and men of the Customs.
Chairman of the committee, Hon Yakubu Dogara, after waiting endlessly for Gyang to appear before the committee on Tuesday, insisted that the probe of the former Comptroller General would still go ahead.

'Whatever happens to the former Customs boss, he will still be invited to answer germane questions on what happened during his tenure.

'When we went on oversight function, we met some officers sleeping in their offices. They had virtually turned the office to their homes and when we asked them, they explained that they were transferred without the usual transfer bonus, which was to take care of them for the next 28 days before they could integrate into the community. 'We learnt that nobody was paid, invariably, there was a connivance. Look at the N300million which was supposed to be given to officers on transfer in 2007. There was no assurance that the officers will be paid if we don't ask questions," Dogara said.
