The Ogun State Deputy Governor, Alhaja Salmot Badru, who ran into the mob made up of mostly students of the institution was held up for over four hours.
Trouble was said to have started when a bullion van belonging to the bank was said to have knocked down a commercial motorcyclist popularly known as Okada, said to be carrying a female students passenger, killing both the motorcyclist and the student instantly.
Other students who witnessed the accident were said to have apprehended one of the policemen in the bullion van, one Sergeant Ikpe, beating him into a state of unconsciousness while the driver was said to have escaped. The enraged students who were said to have mobilized themselves with the support of indigenes, allegedly stormed the bank and set it ablaze before proceeding to the police station which was also burnt.
Chanting war songs, the mob which was still spoiling for more action encountered the deputy governor, who was said to be returning from presentation of staff of office to the new Oba of Imala an assignment she performed on behalf of the governor.
The deputy governor was said to have stopped her convoy, got down from her vehicle and pleaded with the students to allow peace to reign, promising that every effort would be made to get the driver of the bullion van arrested. But the students were unmoved by the deputy governor's plea and refused to release the policeman who had been beaten unconscious for her to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
