PDP chieftain urges quick confirmation of new EFCC boss

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state, Chief Lanre Rasaq, has urged the Senate to expedite action on the confirmation of the appointment of the new acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs Farida Waziri, so that all cases being handled by the commission are not unnecessarily stalled.

Rasaq, who was a former commissioner in Lagos in a statement yesterday, appealed to senators who were aggrieved by the appointment of Mrs Waziri to allow national interest override their personal or sectional interest.

According to him: 'The truth is that the fight against corruption in Nigeria is an emergency situation that needs a quick and urgent response, which I believe is the reason while President Yar'Adua approved the appointment of an experienced hand like Waziri to take immediate charge of the commission. So, it will not be good for the image of our senators if they are now being seen as the one slowing down the process or trying to frustrate the effective functioning of the new EFCC boss under the guise of some excuses.

'My appeal to them is to please, in the interest of the nation, confirm the appointment of this woman that Nigerians have so much commended for her pace setting record in anti-corruption war at the police Special Fraud Unit so that she can quickly bring her experience to bare on the fight against this cankerworm."

The party chieftain further said that he had made personal findings about the character and commitment of Mrs Waziri, adding that 'the summary of my findings are excellent and a pointer that the nation has found the right person for that sensitive office and that is why I can come out to call for support for her."
He that said apart from the National Assembly, there is the need for all stakeholders in the anti-corruption war to rally round Mrs Waziri so that her job can be smooth, stressing that 'this is all the nation needs at this critical time to win this war, grow and develop at a pace that will be commensurate with the yield from our God given resources."

According to him, 'I am convinced Waziri has been well equipped in terms of training and educational qualifications, experience and all it takes to surpass past records in that commission. So, what is left at this point is for our lawmakers and other stakeholders to support and encourage her because Nigerians like her and they want her."

Chief Rasaq also urged all groups and individuals that have been 'orchestrating campaign of calumny and blackmail against the new EFCC boss to repent because Nigerians are wiser and they can easily understand that when there is need for a change in our own part of the world, the displaced will always want to go out of their ways to prevent it through needless character assassination and mudslinging. I also appeal to this set of people to stop cooking wicked lies against an innocent woman whose only crime is that her fatherland has called her out on a national assignment."
