DPP demands dissolution of Delta Electoral Commission

The Democratic People's Party (PDP) in Delta has called for the dissolution of the state Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) and a total rejection and cancellation of the May 10 Local Council election results released by the electoral body.

The Democratic People's Party (PDP) in Delta has called for the dissolution of the state Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) and a total rejection and cancellation of the May 10 Local Council election results released by the electoral body.

In a statement signed by the state DPP chairman, Chief Tony Ezeagwu, and made available to Daily Sun, it said, 'We call on all opposition parties and indeed all well meaning Nigerians and Deltans in particular, to call for a total cancellation of the polls and the dissolution of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), chaired by retired Justice Samuel Gege Jaho."

The party condemned the entire conduct of the local government election, which it said was characterized by massive rigging, terrorism, thuggery, arm banditry, and brigandry in the areas where elections managed to hold. 'We put it on record that the total exercise before, during and after the fraudulent elections was in total non-compliance and non-conformity to rules, principles, ethics, norms, codes of conduct and rules of engagement that govern the conduct of elections as enshrined in the electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," the statement said.
It stated that, ' in Oshimili South local government the capital city where there was semblance of election, our party, DPP clearly won the chairmanship seat as well as Wards Six, eight and eleven councillorship seats and surprisingly, the biased umpire DSIEC, declared the losers in the ruling party, PDP winners without recourse to people's mandate."

The party also condemned what it called the brutal killings of innocent and helpless members of the opposition political parties by security agents and thugs of the ruling party.

'The entire conduct of the said election was a sham, a mockery of democratic process, a violent rape of the people's sacred mandate worse than a daylight robbery of all, which negates principles of constitutional due process and the rule of law which the President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua-led Federal Government has sworn to respect and uphold."
