The accident which occurred at Km.6, Benin-Akure Road, attracted many sympathizers who could not hold back tears as they saw the gory sight.
Mangled remains of the victims and splatters of their blood added to the goriness of the accident.
Among the deceased were seven female and nine men. Fifteen had died on the spot while one died later in hospital. The six people injured and bodies of the dead were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The Tollgate Benin Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Uzor Chukwuma, who led the rescue operation, told journalists that the corps member and her daughter were in an 18-seater bus traveling to Benin from Akure.
According to him, other vehicles involved in the accident were a Peugeot 504 station wagon taxi, traveling from Benin, and a bus with registration number FGN 358 G45 belonging to the NYSC.
He said the FRSC has been trying to reach out to relations of the deceased and injured, adding that belongings of the accident victims had been taken to the Tollgate Unit Command of the FRSC.
The Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Bulus Dawang advised motorists to drive carefully as there were many potholes and failed portions on the road. He also advised against reckless driving and overspeeding.
