NDLEA nabs carpenter, 3 others with 5.55 kg of cocaine


A 35-year-old carpenter, Godwin Uchenna Akubuo, and four other suspected drug traffickers had their journey terminated at the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for testing positive to drug ingestion at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport MMIA Lagos.

Godwin swallowed 70 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine on his way to Madrid on May 4, 2008.

He confessed to the crime claiming that he carried the drug in order to raise money to marry. 'I have rheumatism that is affecting my work. I can not stand for a long time and I need money to marry in August," he said.

Also arrested are Agbonifo Bright, 32, Ifenna Kingsley Okoli 37, and Onuba James, 38. All the suspects have successfully evacuated the drugs from their system.

The NDLEA Assistant Commander Operations and Investigation Alhaji Idris Bello who disclosed that the suspects have just been transferred from the legal seat where they were placed on observation said that it is very risky to ingest illicit drugs. According to Bello 'not all of them are lucky to successfully evacuate the drugs, some die in the process due to drug burst".

Bright, a trader was caught on Saturday May 3, at about 830 pm while attempting to board a Turkish airline flight to Istanbul . He ingested 100 wraps of substances that proved positive for cocaine weighing 2.180 kilogrammes. This is the single highest quantity ingested this year. Bright, a father of three said that his wife is about to put to birth.

'If I have money I will not swallow drugs, it is not easy to swallow drugs my brother, it is just like swallowing stones. Ordinarily you will not want to swallow one but when you consider problem you will not mind swallowing even 200 wraps. I do not have a job and my wife will soon deliver," said Bright who lives at 4 Brethren Street Ejigbo Lagos . He is from Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

On Thursday May 1, Ifenna Kingsley Okoli was nabbed at about 830 pm on his way to Paris . He was to travel on Iberia flight when officers of NDLEA detected that he had swallowed 70 wraps of substances that proved positive for cocaine weighing 877 grams.

The motor spare parts dealer that lives at 9 Oroki Street Coker Surulere Lagos confessed to have invested 4,000 Euro in the illegal deal. If he was successful he would have been given 10,000 Euro in Paris with which he will buy motor spare parts. He was to settle his sponsor the sum of 4,200 Euro after selling his goods leaving him with 1,800 Euro.
The fourth suspect, Onuba James was arrested on April 27, at about 830 pm on his way to Athens .

He had ingested 67 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.137 kilogrammes. James used to work as a laborer in a battery manufacturing factory in Athens . He said that he lost his job and after one and half year of joblessness he had no choice but to indulge in illegal drug trafficking. All four suspects will be charged to court.
