KAMPALA - The police have arrested a man for allegedly conning Ugandans that the famous Nigerian film star, Ms Genevieve Nanji, would perform in Uganda.
The Deputy Director of CID, Mr Okoth Ochola, said the suspect had a forged Nigerian passport in the names of Mr Chijioke Mbaeyi.
Mbaeyi, reportedly told his victims that Nanji would stage a show in Uganda with a group of seven other Nigerian stars.
The purported show at Speke Resort Munyonyo, according to the police, was to take place last month and thereafter Nanji was expected to shoot a film on the effects of HIV/Aids in Sub-Saharan Africa.
'He was arrested on May 6 in Kampala after the Nigerian embassy learnt that he was living here illegally and conning people," Ochola said on Tuesday.
Mbaeyi allegedly said the Nigerian High Commissioner was behind the show.
Ochola said the suspect placed adverts on WBS TV promoting the show yet his intention was to con money from the sponsors.
Ochola said the suspect would be charged with impersonation and forgery.
Last month Nnaji sent an email message to The Monitor in reference to the organisers of the Munyonyo show, saying she was not going to stage any show in Uganda. She said her managers were not approached about the show.
Nanji is one of the most celebrated Nigerian actresses and singers. She is a Nigerian star voted the country's best actress of 2004.
