The Senate President, Senator David Mark, has declared that the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly would continue to discharge its constitutional duties without fear or favour, irrespective of whose ox is gored.

Senator Mark, who gave the assurance at the weekend, said the current Senate would be transparent, open and would not be scared of discussing any topic that affects the entire citizenry of the country, just as he called on Nigerians to support the Upper House in the discharge of its constitutional duties.

Speaking in Ede, Osun State, the Senate President gave indication that the Senate as currently constituted is committed to the overall welfare of the entire citizen of the country irrespective of status.

Senator Mark, who was a special guest at the award ceremony of Senator Isiaka Adeleke Scholarship Scheme, disclosed that the Senate would protect the nation's integrity in order to lay a solid foundation for the socio-political and economic development of the nation. The Senate helmsman, who applauded Senator Adeleke for the initiative, stressed that education is the best legacy one can bestow on any generation.

His words: 'It is gladdening that Senator Adeleke initiated this kind of schalarship award for indigent students in his constituency. Like I always tell my children, education is the greatest inheritance they can inherit from me because once you educate somebody, you have given him a lifeline.
'When you educate your people, they can no longer be manipulated by any politician and politics would remain pure in the face of the people."

Senate Mark said that efforts would be made to encourage education at all levels by the current Senate.
Speaking earlier, Senator Adeleke, who represents Osun West Senatorial District, disclosed that his decision to award the scholarship to the over 100 tertiary institution students drawn from his senatorial district was borne out of his conviction that education is the best legacy one can bestow on a generation.
Senator Adeleke, who was former governor of the state, presented N50,000 each to the students and also unveiled his plans to establish skill acquisition centres in all the ten local government areas of Osun West Senatorial District.

Chairman of the award ceremony, Professor, Siyan Oyeweso said the cardinal principles of the award was that it reflect the geographical character of the Osun West Senatorial District.
He said the scholarship scheme will help to turn around the fortunes of the people by increasing the level of their awareness.
