The father of four, who beheaded his sleeping wife on Wednesday, has given reasons for his evil deed. Fifty-year-old Joseph Enitan said a spiritualist told him that his wife was responsible for his 13-year impotence.

Looking for a way out of his troubles, Enitan, who claims to be a farmer in Abeokuta, bought a cutlass and chopped off the head of his wife who had four children for him. Their eldest child is 27 years old.

Enitan told Daily Sun: "The problem I have is in my head. I keep hearing voices in my head. There are spirits in my head. They said I should kill my wife or there won't be peace for me."
He said his problem started in 1992 when he became impotent and was running from one church to another until he was asked to reconcile with his wife who had left him.

When the couple reunited, every member of the family felt that the storm was over until May 11, when Enitan gave everyone a shock, as he sneaked to the bedside of his 48-year-old wife, Esther, at about 1 a.m. and chopped her head off with a single stroke of the machete that his son had seen him sharpening in the daytime.

He said: "It was at about 1 a.m. that the spirits started disturbing me. They were saying: ‘Kill her! Kill her!!' I know it was bad to kill my wife, but I brought the machete and cut off her head. The blood gushed out with a force. Then I looked at my wife and started crying."
Enitan's youngest son, Femi (17), said he woke up at about 3 a.m. to answer the call of nature when he noticed slippery liquid on the floor and his father was nowhere to be found.

"I thought the liquid was palm oil. It was coming from my mother. I tried to wake her up but she wouldn't. Then I shouted. The door was hooked from outside. The neighbours opened it for me. My father has problem, it's like a curse following him. He hears voices in his head. I don't blame him for what happened," said Femi, who recalled seeing his father with a machete on May 8, but on inquiry the man told him it was for farming.

Enitan sneaked out of the compound and threw the machete into the toilet. He trekked to the garage, waited till dawn before taking a bus to his village in Abeokuta. There, he stunned his relatives when he told them he had killed the mother of his four children. He identified his children as Seun (27), Toyin (26), Fumilayo (25) and Femi (17).

Enitan also told Daily Sun that after his last child, he wanted more children, but his discovery that he could not have erection or make love put an end to the dream.
According to him, his sexual problem came with cold, body pains, stomach pains, head pains. "Those were the things they used to sieze my manhood and erection," he said, adding: "I never visited any hospital, but my wife took me to different churches and we prayed, but the problem persisted."
He explained that he never had a quarrel with his wife before she left him.

Detectives said that after a thorough investigation, it was discovered that Enitan returned to his wife two weeks ago because he was told that his erection problem could be solved if he settled amicably with her. He became angry and frustrated, when, after two weeks at their Alakuko home, his manhood remained dead.

Seun, Enitan's oldest child, said she and her siblings did not have any grudge against their father. According to her, what he did was beyond his control. She attributed the crime to the voices in her father's head, which he had repeatedly told them about.

She pointed out that her father came from Abeokuta to visit them, but stayed longer than usual. She also revealed that the man had attempted to commit suicide once by tying a rope to a tree to hang himself, but it didn't work out. She insisted that it was the voices that ordered him.
She said: "We were with him last night. He was crying seriously. We knew he never meant to kill our mother. They never quarreled."
