Re-run guber polls: We won't drop governors - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Thursday that it will not substitute any of its governors in states where there would be fresh governorship elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Thursday that it will not substitute any of its governors in states where there would be fresh governorship elections.

This is coming just as the party has appealed to its members in Adamawa State to vote en mass for its candidate, Murtala Nyako in Saturday's re-run election.

A statement from the National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, after PDP's weekly National Working Committee (NWC) meeting said the party had received complaints about alleged plan to stop some governors from contesting re-run elections.
The party said it will revisit complaints arising from the conduct of state congresses, especially where there were two congresses.

The statement, however, said the party would rely largely on the report of the Independent Electoral Committee (INEC) as well as the party's congress committees that supervised and conducted the election.

'The NWC also noted with serious concern the attempt by a few members of the party in states where the appeal court has ordered a re-run to cause division and disaffection among party members.

The statement said: 'All party members are reminded that no court ruling has so far nullified the governorship candidature of PDP flagbearers. There is, therefore, no need to substitute candidates. The party will not hesitate to invoke disciplinary measures on members who continue to fan the embers of discord for their own selfish reasons".

On the state congresses, it said: 'The NWC will, however, be guided by the reports from INEC, the PDP monitoring teams at the last congresses as well as the realities on the ground in order to arrive at a mutually acceptable decision to all parties."
