LASG to demolish defective buildings

The Lagos State Government has warned that it would demolish all buildings with construction defects to reduce the incidence of building collapse in the state.

The Lagos State Government has warned that it would demolish all buildings with construction defects to reduce the incidence of building collapse in the state.

The Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Physical Planning, Mr Muhkta Egberongbe, said that such buildings posed risks to both their occupants and other people.

Egberongbe said that relevant authorities had been directed to identify such buildings, noting that most of them were built by private developers since 1985.
``Removing such buildings constructed a long time ago is a challenge to the Lagos State Government as they have constituted a threat to lives and property,'' he said.

``We are, therefore, determined to control this in order to reduce the incidence of building collapse which has been on the increase in recent times,'' the lawmaker said.
He said that government had divided the state into six regions for effective monitoring of construction work. ``Government has also given approval for two levels of approvals in the construction of buildings,'' Egberongbe added.

``The first level approval will be for the foundation, while the second will take care of the structure itself and all buildings are expected to have both approvals,'' he stressed.
The committee chairman added that plans were on to insure all new buildings in the state, to reduce the burden on owners and occupants in the event of any disaster.
