Ekiti speaker may be arrested soon

Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Femi Bamisile, may be arrested in the next seven days, if the threat, of Chairman of West Africa Bar Association (WABA), Femi Falana, to issue the state police command ultimatum to arrest and prosecute him, is anything to go by.

Falana, who told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday that he was going to meet with the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Yomi Onasile to inform him to arrest and prosecute the speaker for the shooting in the state in which two members of Action Congress (AC) were hit in the legs by bullets, allegedly said to have been shot by the speaker.

Falana said Bamisile should be prosecuted for attempted murder, warning that if the state police command failed to do so, a seven-day ultimatum would be issued to the command.
He said: 'We have taken it up.

I'm going to see the police commissioner to find out whether within the next seven days - that's the ultimatum we are giving him - the suspect would have been arrested and arraigned in court. And if this is not done, we are going to force them to do it. Those two chaps would have died, but there is already a case of attempted murder which has to be pursued to a logical conclusion. Otherwise, they are not going to stop this mess of just shooting at people in Ekiti State. We are not going to allow it."

On Monday, April 7, two members of AC were allegedly shot in the legs by the speaker, while they were protesting the constitution of the State Independent Electoral Commission(SIEC) in preparations for the council polls in the state.

Although the Speaker has denied pulling the trigger, there have been calls that he should be arrested and prosecuted by the police.
Falana also faulted the submission of the police on the murder charge leveled against ex-governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, which cleared him of complicity in the murder of one Omojola in the state.
Falana said: 'No police officer, however, highly placed, has the right under the law to clear anybody who's standing trial in court. It is very contemptuous and it attracts three months imprisonment. And we are going to request the attorney of the state to pursue that matter."
