A manager of a first generation bank and a female staffer on Monday met their untimely death during a robbery attack in Ode-Irele, Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The manager of the bank, Daily Sun learnt, was shot in the banking hall while arguing with the robbers. The other victim, a lady was gunned down while attempting to scale the fence of the bank.
Eyewitness account said the robbers, numbering about eight, invaded Ode-Irele town through the waterways, in Akotogbo, in the same local government. They stormed the bank premises around 9 a.m.
The robbers allegedly had easy access to the bank and ordered customers and members of staff around to lie down with their faces down.
One of the robbers, who recognized the bank manager, demanded the key of the bank's safe from him. The bank manager told them that the key was not in his custody. The explanation, it was gathered, did not go down well with the robbers, who shot him in the chest. The bank manager was said to have died immediately.
The other victim of the attack was said to have escaped from the banking hall and attempted to scale the fence of the bank when he was spotted by one of the robbers, who shot her in the process.
The robbers were, however, unlucky, as the bullion van that had gone to bring the money meant for the salary of the workers of the local government had not returned when they struck. They were said to have stolen money deposited before their arrival, which had not been taken to the vault.
Residents of the community expressed disappointment over the failure of the mobile policemen drafted to the town to thwart the robbery attack.
The state police command's spokesman, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, said the command had been informed about the incident.
He, however, said the command was yet to be briefed on the detail of the robbery attack.
