Abuja set for maiden police marathon against corruption

In line with its current anti-corruption crusade, the Nigerian Police is set to organize the first edition of the Nigeria People Police Marathon in collaboration with a team of marketing communications and brand companies.

In line with its current anti-corruption crusade, the Nigerian Police is set to organize the first edition of the Nigeria People Police Marathon in collaboration with a team of marketing communications and brand companies.

The event, which holds in Abuja, this April, is being staged under the theme: Race Against Corruption, with the overall objective of exploiting the power of sports, as a unifying factor, to collectively fight corruption and crime in an atmosphere of fun and conviviality.

According to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, in a release made available to Daily Sun, the current leadership of the Nigerian Police is geared towards forging an enduring cordial relationship with the citizenry.

Okiro, who is also excited that his officers are going to be involved in a marathon with those they are paid to protect, further added that the battle against crime and corruption can only be won with ample support from the people.
“One of the biggest battles we have had to fight over the years is the issue of public perception of what the police stands for, ” Okiro said.

With the forthcoming People Police Marathon, the Nigerian public will now have the opportunity to appreciate that the slogan, the Police is your friend, is not a mere statement, but a statement of fact and that as a rule, every officer must work bearing this in mind,” Okiro said.

Shedding more light on the initiative, Mr Akin Adeoya, CEO of Marketing Mix, one of the event’s organizers disclosed it is opened to members of the Nigerian Police and the public, adding that over 20,000 duly registered runners are expected to grace the main event. It will also feature a VIP race, where celebrities and distinguished Nigerians will run for charity.
