Kogi poll: Rig and die, Iwu tells officials

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC professor Maurice Iwu has placed a curse on officials of the commission that would compromise in Saturday's re-scheduled governorship election in Kogi State.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC professor Maurice Iwu has placed a curse on officials of the commission that would compromise in Saturday's re-scheduled governorship election in Kogi State.

Addressing INEC officials in Lokoja in preparation for the election, Iwu declared that any officials of the commission that accepts bribe in the course of discharging his or her duty would die.

According to Iwu, the Kogi governorship election is a test case and as such all necessary arrangements have been concluded to ensure a hitch-free exercise in the state.

The INEC boss explained that no money was given to the commission for the re scheduled election, saying that the commission was making use of the money set aside for their legal department to pursue cases in court involving INEC.

Iwu announced that a new salary structure would be approved for INEC officials by July this year which will make them independent of the civil service.
He said INEC has deployed directors to serve as presiding officers while NYSC members will serve as polling agents.

But Assistant Director, Public Affairs of INEC, Ndidi Okafor said 42 buses conveying electoral materials have been dispatched to their different locations for smooth elections.
Meanwhile, Policemen from the neighboring states have been drafted to maintain law and order in the state as anxiety mounts, but Lokoja, the state capital has remained peaceful as policemen patrol the town.
