Ex-councillor, 2 others arrested for drug trafficking


Attempt by an ex-councillor, Eta James Omojuwa, to raise money from illicit drug trafficking has met a brick wall and landed him in trouble, following his arrest by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos on Monday.

Omojuwa, 40 was arrested at about 9am during the screening of passengers on Virgin Atlantic flight to London . The diploma holder in applied economics from the University of Calabar ingested 84 wraps of substances that proved positive for cocaine.

The suspected drug trafficker confessed that he invested one million naira in buying the cocaine, having been told by a Jamaican woman in his previous visit to London that there is much profit in the business.
He told officers that he was once a supervisory councillor for Agriculture, Finance and Health at the Sapele Local Government Council from 2003 to 2007.

In a related development, Obiaku Peter, was nabbed at the central screening point of the airport on Sunday at about 8pm during the boarding of Air France to Vienna . The 30-year-old engineer was found to have inserted six wraps of cocaine into his anus weighing 253 grammes. Obiaku studied Mechanical Engineering at the Vienna Polytechnic College. He is married to an Austrian woman and hails from Ifitedunu Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Also arrested is Atewe Oge Rawlings, 25, from Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State. The Senior Secondary School Certificate holder ingested 130 wraps of drugs that tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.759 kilogrammes.

This is the highest quantity to be ingested since the beginning of the year. Rawlings was nabbed during the screening of passengers on Alitalia flight from Lagos to Milan . He has been working in Perugia Italy for the past seven years. According to the NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Victor Cole-Showers, investigation is in progress and the suspects will soon be charged to court.
