Trouble appears far from being over for Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, following an alleged plot by some of the state lawmakers to cut his 2008 budget by half.
The governor has late last year presented to the state House of Assembly an N85 billion appropriation bill for the development of the state this year.
But indications are that the legislature is not in a hurry to pass the budget as some of the members said to be taking orders from a rival top politician in the state are bent on making things difficult for Obi, whose tenure was elongated by three years following an epic court battle.
Some of the legislators were, indeed, said to have on Sunday met the top politician at his Abuja residence where the decision was taken to drastically reduce the fiscal estimates by 50 per cent, as a prelude towards launching an impeachment move on the governor.
So much intrigues have so far trailed the budget. At a point, the House was even accused of deliberately setting obstacles by demanding details of it at the budget hearing. This had already prompted the CLO in the state to write to the House warning it against such antics.
Equally, a number of the people of the state have been condemning the House's footdraging on the budget
A prominent son-of-the-soil, who spoke, pleading anonymity warned on the moves to truncate or make nonsense of the budget so that Obi will be handicapped towards implementing his programmes.
He called on the House to have a re-think and realize that the budget was not Obi's but that of the people of Anambra State .
