14 passengers die in road mishap


No fewer than 11 passengers, mostly traders lost their lives on Tuesday in a fatal road accident which occurred at a spot in Ikire along the Ife-Ibadan Express Way .

No fewer than 11 passengers, mostly traders lost their lives on Tuesday in a fatal road accident which occurred at a spot in Ikire along the Ife-Ibadan Express Way .

A source told Daily Sun that the accident involved an 18 seater coaster commercial bus which ran into a stationary trailer parked beside the expressway killing the 11 passengers on the spot.

The source disclosed that those involved in the fatal accident were mostly traders travelling to Lagos from Osogbo for an early morning market which is suspected to be the popular Aswani market which holds every Tuesday.

Another account of the mishap revealed that the accident happened when the driver of the commercial bus, a middle age man dosed off while on the wheel and before the passengers knew what was happening the coaster bus ran into the heavy duty vehicle.

The source who was at the scene of the accident told Daily Sun that most of the passengers including the driver died as a result of the impact of accident while few others sustained serious injury.
According to him, the few survivors were taken to hospital at Ikire for treatment while the corpses of the traders were also deposited in the same hospital.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Wale Olaniyan, who confirmed the mishap said 11 passengers died while 15 others were seriously injured.
Olaniyan told newsmen that the injured and dead passengers were taken to Oluyoro Hospital Apomu and that the accident happened as a result of dangerous driving but did not state what happened to the trailer driver.
