The Sokoto State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA) said at the weekend that no fewer than 60,000 persons have been infected with HIV in the last three years in the state.
The Sokoto State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA) said at the weekend that no fewer than 60,000 persons have been infected with HIV in the last three years in the state.
Its Co ordinator, Alhaji Haliru Usman Tambuwal made the disclosure to newsmen in Sokoto at the weekend.
He said most of those infected by HIV/AIDS are young men between the ages of 18 and 30, adding that the committee has embarked on massive enlightenment campaign with a view to curbing the menace in the state.
According to Tambuwal, the state government has already procured anti -retroviral drugs and also commenced distribution to various health centres across the state.
He noted that all local government council chairmen have been directed to establish associations in their locality for effective distribution of drugs to victims and also enmabrk on enlightenment of the people on the dangers of engaging in illicit sex.
Tambuwal added that a telecommunications firm, MTN has assisted the agency through the provision of milk and other materials to children who were infected with the virus in the state.
He therefore appealed to the people to restrain themselves from engaging multiple sexual partners, pointing out that drugs are now provided free at Usman Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto.
