…Nnamani opposes consensus candidate

Former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, has kicked against moves by some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to have the next national chairman of the party emerge by consensus.

• Says it's fraudulent

Former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, has kicked against moves by some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to have the next national chairman of the party emerge by consensus.

His stance sharply contradicts the position of strongman of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, who hinted Thursday that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo was working towards having former Ebonyi governor, Chief Sam Egwu, as chairman of the party by consensus.

Adedibu told newsmen shortly after playing host to Egwu that Obasanjo would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Egwu became the chairman of the party by consensus.

'I trust Obasanjo in Ota, he is somebody God has given the wisdom to make things happen.
'He will perfect everything; other contestants will withdraw for you," Adedibu had assured an apparently enthralled Egwu.

But Nnamani in his counter said such an arrangement would not only be fraudulent but would promote incompetence and ineptitude.

His words: 'I wouldn't know the basis of consensus. It's seen as the fraud we are talking about. Candidates should be allowed to contest since they had got the forms."
Continuing, the ex-Senate President contended that if the PDP knew they were going to adopt consensus, they should not have sold nomination forms.

He, as a result, tasked the party to provide a level playing ground for all candidates, adding, 'Consensus is another form of affirmation, which breeds incompetence and ineptitude."
But a socio-political group, Ebonyi Unity Movement, EBUM, said weekend that it had endorsed Dr. Nnamdi Ozobia as its consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman of the PDP.
In a statement in Abakaliki, the group noted that only such an arrangement could stave off imminent crisis within the party, especially in the southeast geo-political zone after the forthcoming national convention of PDP.
