No fewer than 10 persons were killed when a gang of armed robbers stormed an old generation bank in Ilesa, Osun State on Monday and made away with millions of naira. Among those shot dead in the mid morning raid was a police sergeant.
Beyond those killed, 15 persons were seriously injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital.
Apart from the police sergeant, nine customers and passers-by, who were caught in the shooting, lost their lives.
Daily Sun learnt that the robbers stormed the bank at Ereja Square, Ilesa at about 11:00 am in three vehicles, two cars and a bus and took strategic positions before launching their dastardly attack.
According to a witness, the leader of the gang wore police uniform, which made the bank security operatives think he was a normal police officer until the shooting started.
It was further gathered that the robbers, having gained entry into the banking hall, ordered the customers and the bank staff to lie face down before making their way to the vault.
Cash running into millions of naira was said to have been carted away by the robbers who shot sporadically while escaping from the bank premises.
Osun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP. Joshua Olayemi, who spoke on the robbery could, however, confirm only five persons dead.
The PPRO said the police command had begun investigation into the incident and that no suspect had been arrested yet.
In December 2007, several robbery incidents were recorded in parts of the state, including Ikirun, Ejigbo and Ede with many people, including policemen, killed.
