The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has called on the former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku to leave its chairman Professor Maurice Iwu alone, warning him to desist from further attack on the person of the INEC boss.
The commission, in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the INEC chairman, Mr Andy Ezeani stated that 'the consistency of malicious attacks against the chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar should be noted and condemned by the public," expressing worry at the level of desperation that gave vent to unrestrained attacks on Iwu.
'It is obvious that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his lieutenants have twisted the process of seeking justice to mean sinister attacks on the person of the INEC chairman," the commission noted, pointing out that 'the recent series of assaults on Prof Iwu not only reflect a new height of desperation, but is clearly another deliberate attempt by Alhaji Atiku to mislead Nigerians and incite them against the person of the INEC chairman."
While expressing assurance that 'such machinations will continue to fail," INEC stated that the matter assumed a worrisome dimension when Atiku described Iwu as a liar regretting that 'the development speaks of a slide to a dangerous level of frustration and desperation."
The commission reminded Atiku that Iwu could not have declared him a winner of an election he never won, pointing out that it was the people of Nigeria that did not vote for him during the last April 2007 presidential election.
