Obasanjo an embarrassment to PDP - Lar

The first chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Solomon Lar, has described former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as an embarrassment to the PDP following the revelation that he allegedly had an affair with his daughter-in-law. He asked the former president to resign from the party honourably.

Speaking to journalists in Jos, shortly after his arrival from Abuja, Chief Lar said: "We were all shocked when we read in the paper of an affidavit sworn to by the son of the former president, Gbenga Obasanjo about what I would like to call corruption against humanity and what a father could do to his son."

He said what was more disturbing was that the daughter-in-law, in replying to the petition, did not deny it.
He recalled that all that Obasanjo's daughter-in-law asked for was protection and getting money from her husband who is seeking divorce.
According to Lar: "Obasanjo too did not deny. All he was doing was to be accusing the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzoh Kalu. It is a terrible thing to the nation. He is trying to make that part of Nigeria, Sodom and Gomorrah."

Lar recalled that when he was the chairman of the PDP, it was stated in the party's constitution that the Board of Trustees was the conscience of the party and therefore people who are members of the board must have conscience and clean hands.

He said he was sure this has not changed, saying, "the former president of Nigeria had embarrassed the party by that alleged action and cases abound that any officer, be it governor or any leader that embarrasses the PDP must leave the party."
Lar recalled that he warned Obasanjo, at the initial stage, that the quarrel between him and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was capable of destroying the political party, those who started it and the nation at large.

"I quoted the Action Group crisis of 1962 to 1963 until the military take-over. I told him the quarrel will not end with him and Atiku Abubakar. What is happening now is as a result of it all and it may not end with them," he said.
While calling on Nigerians of goodwill to do something to stop it, Lar said that Obasanjo should lie low and not have anything to do with the party while personalities, like Ooni of Ife, Sultan of Sokoto, Gwom Gbong Jos, Tor Tiv and Shehu of Borno should assist to see what could be done to settle the matter amicably.

He pointed out that Atiku never left PDP for one day.
"It was PDP that left Atiku and he only used the Action Congress (AC) as a platform to contest when he was denied one by the PDP."
Lar reiterated that he too did not leave the party but still remained a member of the "authentic PDP", stressing that Chief Ahmadu Ali and Obasanjo were the ones running the "garrison PDP."
He said though members of the "authentic PDP" may be attending meetings with members of the garrison PDP," they knew where they belong, including President Umar Yar'Adua.

He said both Ali and Obasanjo were not politicians and could never be.
On the administration of Yar'Adua, he said the president was doing well, adding: "Although he is being very cautious about what he does, by his action he has shown that he loves Nigeria and wants it to remain united and indivisible. He respects the rule of law and due process."

He called on Nigerians to give Yar'Adua their support.
Lar commended the administration for its ability to clear all the obstacles put in the way of governance by the former administration, especially with an Attorney General of the Federation who knows his onions.
