Igbinedion returns, faces EFCC


Former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion is back in the country after several weeks of speculation about his whereabouts. He returned to Abuja on Sunday and is expected to turn himself in at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in the nation's capital.

Former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion is back in the country after several weeks of speculation about his whereabouts. He returned to Abuja on Sunday and is expected to turn himself in at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in the nation's capital.

Daily Sun investigation revealed that Igbinedion, already declared wanted by the EFCC over allegation of money laundering and corrupt enrichment to the tune of several billions of naira, sneaked into the country from Sierra-Leone on Sunday morning.

He was said to have travelled by road into the country, ostensibly to avoid drawing attention to himself.
According to sources, while in Freetown Igbinedion kept a low-profile during his sojourn in the West African country.

The money allegedly looted by Igbinedion was on account of his management of the funds of Edo State for the past eight years he presided over the affairs of the state.
To underscore its resolve to prosecute him, EFCC had already filed a 142-count charge against the ex-governor having obtained a warrant for his arrest from a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja.
However, Igbinedion has consistently absolved himself of any wrongdoing while promising to honour the EFCC invitation in due course.
Igbinedion further complained that the EFCC was not fair to him in its handling of his case. Last week, his troubles were compounded when his house in London was raided by operatives of the London Metropolitian Police..
