Afenifere condemns attack on Fasoranti

The Pan Yoruba group, Afenifere, has decried the violent attack on its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, worsening state of social insecurity and urged government to do something about it. Fasoranti was attacked on Tuesday at his Akure home by robbers, who inflicted bodily harm on him and his guards.

Afenifere, in a reaction, condemned the attack and the growing incidents of insecurity in Yorubaland.
It recalled that some months ago, bandits also invaded the Apapa home of Afenifere Leader, Senator Abraham Adesanya and made away with valuables, without any headway made by the police on the matter.

'The former deputy leader of Afenifere, Chief Bola Ige was killed in his bedroom in December 2002, as we write this, his killers are still at large. Several other Yoruba elders, leaders and others have been at the receiving ends of such violent attacks without the police being able to do anything to bring the culprits to book," the group said in a statement, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin.
It challenged the Ondo State Police Command to immediately bring the assailants in the latest attack to book.

'We also call on the PDP-led government to improve the security condition in Yorubaland and Nigeria in general so that life will stop being short, nasty and brutish. The last eight and half years of PDP rule nationally and four and half years in Yorubaland have witnessed the worsening of incidents of poverty that over 70 per cent of our people now live below poverty line.
'This has meant a breeding ground for social deviants, bandits and willing tools in the hands of unscrupulous people.

'There is the urgent need to embark on massive creation of jobs and enabling environment for enterprise so that a lot of the young people who are being recruited into crime will have other gainful things to do," the statement said.
