Lagos state governor Babatunde Fashola has incorporated two traffic offenders that were given clemency by the State's Council on Prerogative of Mercy. The two men, a doctor and a lawyer, were among the 500 eminent men and women that were enlisted as non-uniformed Special Traffic Mayor (STM) corps.

Fashola, speaking at the inauguration of the corps, informed that the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, will be the Grand Mayor, adding that the group constituted accomplished men and women of very high integrity and moral standing that have volunteered to help restore sanity on Lagos roads.

The governor lamented that traffic violation has gotten so bad that even expatriate now brazenly commit traffic offences since the citizens themselves do not respect the laws. 'As I drive across the state daily, I am appalled at the level of impunity and recklessness routinely exhibited on our roads by drivers. It is sad that law enforcement agents who should be role models of obedience to the law rank among the highest violators of traffic regulation," he said.

The Governor, simultaneously, signed the Amended Lagos State Traffic Bill into law. Under the law, offenders will pay nothing less than N50,000 as fine while vehicle owners may be prosecuted along with their offending drivers.

In addition to the inauguration, the Governor launched fifty new Hi Tech Guzzi motorcycles for the use of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, assuring that plans are underway to procure another fifty set of motorbikes, 'This equipment will facilitate easy movement and maneuvering of patrol officers to tackle snarls at critical traffic choke points," he added.
