For 19 years old Elizabeth Adogbeji, the dream of becoming world acclaimed model is fast fading as she is presently battling with kidney failure. Pretty Elizabeth, who has now become a shadow of her former self, looks like a walking corpse and if help does not come her way fast, Nigeria might loose another genius.
Her voice is barely audible. She cannot stand on her own, but has to be assisted, as she kept writhing in pains and tears. She can't eat solid foods anymore. All she has been feeding on now is basically water.
‘It is not because, I don't want to eat solid food, it aggravates my pain. I have to be content with just drinking water.'
Elizabeth's trouble began in December 2003, when she felt a slight pain at the lower part of her abdomen. She did not think anything of it, because she felt, it was just the usual stomachache. Of course, she administered self-medication by using a worm expeller. Then in June 2004, the pain resurfaced and intensified when she tried boarding a bus. She found that she could not stand right and the pain dazed her. The pains and anguish were indescribable, as she was rushed to a nearby patent drugstore, where painkillers and flaggy tablets were administered to her.
Yet the pains refused to go. Thinking it was appendicitis, her father, a retired soldier, had to take her to the Navy Hospital at Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos for proper medical attention. There, she was instructed to go for scanning. The scanning revealed that her right uterus has no infection. She was surprised.
'I was afraid because I have never had an abortion, never given birth before and it could not be through sex," she lamented.
Elizabeth, whose mother is a poor primary school teacher, told Daily Sun that even her menstrual circle is usually late and painful.
'When it comes like that, I usually roll in pains and it's like a tap being opened. It's one trauma I have to go through monthly".
When she noticed swelling in the right side of abdomen, she went for another scanning. This time, she was told that the minor uterus infection has grown to a solid mass and is rapidly affecting her right kidney.
Her medical report, which was signed by Dr (Mrs.)Akinyinka, states that: 'Her history, examination and investigations conducted, a right tubo ovarian mass was diagnosed and she was scheduled for surgery but defaulted for eight months. And at present, the mass is compressing the right kidney causing a right hydronephrosis and she requires urgent surgery to avoid possible damage."
