Yar’Adua summons Ribadu over EFCC men’s refusal to meet IG

Sequel to the refusal of the policemen attached to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to honour a scheduled meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro in Abuja on Thursday, President Umaru Yar’Adua yesterday summoned the embattled chairman of the anti-corruption agency, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to Aso Rock.

Ribadu, who arrived the villa at about 12.13 pm looked his normal self as he walked down the long corridor to the president’s office.

Before he went into the president’s office, the EFCC boss beaming in smile took some time shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries with the members of the State House Press Corps.
His meeting with President Yar’Adua lasted over an hour with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chief of Staff to the president, Major-Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed and some other top government functionaries in attendance.

When he emerged from the meeting, Ribadu who betrayed no emotion however refused to field questions from the State House correspondents, saying the outcome of the meeting was not what he would want to talk about.

Asked if he was comfortable with the raging controversy over the decision to send him on course, he declined comment and on whether he thought the entire thing would die down following the latest development, he quipped: Insha Allah.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro’s meeting with the 395 police officers seconded to the EFCC scheduled for Thursday at the Force Headquarters, Abuja could not hold because all the policemen shunned the meeting.

The police boss and his management team comprising mainly the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIG’s) who had assembled for the meeting were forced to rise when it dawned on them that none of the policemen were coming for the meeting.
The development led to an emergency meeting of top police hierarchy in the IG’s office during which many of the senior police officers were reported to have recommended sanctions against the recalcitrant officers.
