A seaside party outing to mark her 17th birthday anniversary on New Year's day has ended in the death of a teenager. The tragic figure, Fatima Amodu, drowned in the ocean while swimming with friends during the picnic at Lekki beach, Lagos.

Fatima, who hailed from Kwara State, had gone to the beach with friends including her lover, simply identified as Kola for the birthday bash without premonition of the fate that would befall her.

Described as a good swimmer, the deceased birthday girl along with a few other friends took a fatal plunge into the deep blue sea, but was overwhelmed by strong, treacherous waves moments later.

One of her friends, Stella Obi, who recalled Fatima's last moments, said she had admired and commended the deceased shortly before the tide seized her, because she was a better swimmer.
Obi recalled Fatima as urging other party mates to dive and join her in the waters, but was soon to start screaming for help.

Unfortunately, nobody took her serious at first until the tidal waves carried her out of sight. 'We thought it was one of her usual expensive jokes until she disappeared," said Obi.

Fatima's lover, Kola said he was afraid to swim in the turbulent sea and even begged her not to go into the waters, since her mother had warned them all against doing so.
Tears coursing down his cheeks, Kola asked co-picnickers 'who will tell Fatima's mum that she is dead?
'How am I going to tell her, without creating confusion and lamentation? She will demand for her dead body and we are yet to see it. Ah! Death, why? Why Fati?"
He disclosed that both of them had been dating for about a year, describing Fatima as 'a very nice girl." His words: 'I love her so much, she told me that her ambition was to be a very good lawyer."

Another picnicker, Yemisi Adeniyi said she was afraid to even touch the water and for this, she said 'they were all laughing at me. Now you can see what I was afraid of. The celebrant is dead and we cannot even find her body."
Fatima, who resided at Orile Agege, Daily Sun learnt, had been marking her birthday annually in the last five years.
