The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has announced the elevation of 2,160 junior officers to their next ranks.Kayode Odeyemi, an assistant comptroller of prisons and public relations officer of the agency said in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, that the promotion and upgrading to various ranks is part of the welfare package promised by the Comptroller General, Olusola Ogundipe, when he assumed duties 18 months ago.

The beneficiaries include 812 assistant inspectors, 995 senior prisons assistants, 137 prisons assistant [1], 183 prisons assistant [11], and 33 prisons assistant [111]. Names of 1,951 personnel have also been forwarded to the Civil Defence, Immigration and Prisons Board for elevation to the officer cadre.
Ogundipe, who congratulated the affected officers, noted that the promotion came at the beginning of a new year which should serve as a positive impetus for officers and men to improve on their performance.
He said the payment of arrears of the consolidated police and paramilitary salaries structure is one of the steps taken by authorities of the NPS to motivate its personnel.
While assuring that he would not renege in his efforts to bring the prisons service at par with other correctional services worldwide, Ogundipe expressed hope that officers and men of the Nigerian Prisons will reciprocate the gesture by performing at their optimum.
