Militants on Monday killed the joy of Christmas for members of the family of the Chairman of Kiako-Ibeawo Local Government area of Bayelsa State, Hon Bassey Ebitimi Isaac, when they invaded their home and gave them hell.
Daily Sun gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about five, stormed the home of the Isaacs at Nikton road about 1am and vandalized the burglary proof and ordered him to open the door or get killed.
According to Isaac, 'it was around 1am when I was rudely woken by a big bang on my front door. I asked who it was and the answer I got was: ‘We are militants and you should come and open the door before we kill you.' Before I got to the sitting room, a woman sleeping with my children there had opened the door. They came inside and ordered me to lie down. They blindfolded me and tied my hands behind my back and began their operation."
The council boss said the attackers collected the money he had set aside for the Christmas celebrations and the salary of his wife as well as their mobile phones. He said after the operation an argument ensued among the militants on what to do with his car, a Toyota Corolla. He said one of the attackers suggested that they should ask for the key.
Isaac said what he heard next was a loud bang and the car was on fire.
When Daily Sun visited the council chairman's home, smoke was still oozing out of the car, while sympathizers and family friends were on hand to show their solidarity.
Isaac, who appeared calm, explained that naturally he felt sad but that since his life and that of his family members were saved he was grateful to God. He told Daily Sun that he had reported the matter to the police.
Sources close to the Police said investigation had started, as the command wants to ensure security of life and property during this Yuletide season.
Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man, Tolumoye Tony Etebor, has been arraigned before a Yenagoa Magistrate's Court for attempting to kidnap the wife of the Bayelsa State Director of Treasury, Mrs. Ruth Okpoi.
Etebor, arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to deprive Mrs. Okpoi of her liberty, was accused of acting contrary to section 444 (a) and Section 292 of the Criminal Codes of Bayelsa State laws 2006. He pleaded guilty to the offence, adding that it was a set up.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Patricia Ednoyemekemo, adjourned the case till January 21, 2008 for further hearing and ordered that the accused be kept in prison custody.
