Kumuyi tasks leaders on corruption, lauds EFCC, ICPC

General Superintendent, Deeper Life Bible Church, Lagos, Pastor William Kumuyi on Monday commended the efforts of the anti-corruption agencies in the country. He also urged Nigerian leaders to lead with the fear of God.

The cleric gave this remark during a chat with newsmen at the church's conference centre, along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. He spoke at the ongoing Deeper Life National December Retreat, calling on Nigerians to reflect on the past and chart a better course for the New Year.

Kumuiyi admitted the various challenges confronting the nation, especially on the dashed prospects and expectations of Nigerians, explaining that the past failures called for a rethink.

However, he stated that there was still hope if Nigerians, both leaders and followers, would return to God. He bemoaned the inordinate pursuit of wealth and other worldly things, without any consideration for the life beyond, saying this contributed much to the nation's woes.

He said: 'In confronting these challenges, there is need, first and foremost, for spiritual and moral re-awakening in our nation. We must admit that the fear of the Lord, the pursuit of equity and fairness, and the quest for achieving the collective dreams of our people have been in continual retreat in our land.
'The result has been the enthronement of a state of anomie, where everyone does whatever he or she pleases."

He said that the ugly development had led to a situation where 'many of our citizens no longer want to take responsibility for their actions."
Speaking on the ongoing anti-corruption crusade, he said: 'The institutions of state, which are now holding leaders accountable for their actions, are serving to keep everyone on his toes.

'Yet, their efforts will remain feeble except leaders understand their sacred mandate and appreciate the fact that everyone must, one day, render his or her account of stewardship to Almighty God.
'Consequently, those in leadership positions must govern justly, honestly, truthfully, selflessly and humbly."

He called on Nigerians to be resolute in their faith in God and be hopeful that things would be better next year, even as he urged all and sundry to take responsibility and relate with their fellow men with the fear of God.
