Surveyors threaten to sue Lagos govt over appointment

The Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) has threatened to institute a legal action against the Lagos State government over the appointment of the head of the state's Directorate of the Land Services.

The Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) has threatened to institute a legal action against the Lagos State government over the appointment of the head of the state's Directorate of the Land Services.

The registrar of the board, Mr. Thomas Audu, who issued the threat in his office at the Jibowu area of Lagos, said the board strongly objected to the appointment of a person, who was not an Estate Surveyor and Valuer as the the Director of a professional organ such as the Directorate of lands Services of Lagos State. He added that the appointment was made by the former administration of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite objection by stakeholders.

According to him, since the appointment, the board had made several representations about the matter at various levels within the state government, but all efforts have been abortive as the petitions had always mysteriously vanished before arriving at the appropriate table.

He said: ' We are not joking about the matter. We are not happy as a body because it's a slap on our face. The appointment is illegal. Whoever is there is a usurper. Let the person resign before the person is disgraced out. We have both legal and ethical backings. We've tried to be humane; we've used all manner of civility, all to no avail. We would have gone straight to court but we wanted to use all possible effort."

He stressed that all Directorates of Lands at both state and Federal levels are professional entities, charged with the responsibilities of providing expert services in Land use Management and Administration. He insisted that the protest of the board over the appointment of a lawyer to head the disputed office was not borne out of selfish reasons but for posterity and spirit of professionalism.
