Glo rolls out 3G Plus services

Globacom on Wednesday became the first GSM network in Nigeria to launch the 3G Plus technology with the roll out of services in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja.

Globacom on Wednesday became the first GSM network in Nigeria to launch the 3G Plus technology with the roll out of services in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja.

The company launched the service at a ceremony in Lagos, with Chief Operating Officer of Virgin Nigeria, Dr. Yemi Oshindero, as guest of honour.

Globacom won the licence to operate the 3G service in March this year. The network, which paid $150 million for the licence, had, in conjunction with its technical partners, Alcatel-Lucent, become the first network in Nigeria to demonstrate its 3G capabilities to the media and selected corporate clients in August last year.

The successful launch of the 3G Plus services marks the second time Globacom had been in the forefront of pioneering the latest transmission network in Nigeria, having introduced the 2.5G technology at launch in 2003 when other operators were running on the 2G platform.

Chief Operating Officer of Globacom, Mohamed Jameel, said the 3G Plus network will revolutionize the way data is transferred and relayed digitally as it enables a much faster transmission of data, voice, broadband internet and multimedia services over a range of frequencies.

Jameel added that the Glo Mobile 3G Plus network will, in addition to giving customers high speed mobile internet access, allow them to do video calls and video streaming on their 3G mobile handset. It also offers other advanced mobile services, such as Video Greeting Kiosk, Video Mail Box, Video conferencing on both phones and PCs and so many other services on the 3G High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, which enables speeds up to 3.6 Mega bytes per second (Mbps).

'By providing Nigerians with high speed internet access, video calling and mobile TV, among other services, we are empowering our subscribers to enter the next generation of technological innovations made in advanced countries and this will inevitably benefit the lives and businesses of the subscribers that utilize these products," Jameel stated.

The COO said the launch of the 3G Plus network was informed by Globacom's passion to avail subscribers and Nigerians at large the benefits of advances made in information and communications technology for the purpose of spurring economic and socio-political success.

The first service offerings available now on the Glo 3G Plus include video calling, high speed internet access on 3G phone or on laptop computers via data cards, video and audio streaming and mobileTV with the initial channels available being CNN, Fashion TV and Silverbird TV.
The Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Yemi Osindero described the Glo 3G Plus as a 'complete revolution".

'I am proud to identify with Globacom. I am delighted that it is a Nigerian company that is setting the pace in telecoms in Nigeria. With the technology being unveiled here today, there is no limit to what one can do with the telephone," he noted. Osindero added that Globacom has empowered its subscribers to join the rest of the world in the march towards the digital age.
