‘Andy Uba is afraid of free and fair election'

Lagos lawyer and social critic, Chief Azubuike Obiekwe has described the moves of former domestic aide to ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to be a governor at all costs as a sign that he is actually afraid of a free and fair election.

Lagos lawyer and social critic, Chief Azubuike Obiekwe has described the moves of former domestic aide to ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to be a governor at all costs as a sign that he is actually afraid of a free and fair election.

"But for this phobia Andy Uba has for a free and fair election when his master is no longer in power which he is sure he can't win, he should have kept his cool and waited for 2010 when the next gubernatorial election will hold in Anambra State. The year is already by the corner for a fresh gubernatorial election in the state, so I don't see why a person with normal ambition to lead and serve his people like Nigerian politician claim would not wait".

Obiekwe spoke to Saturday Sun in reaction to calls by Uba's camp that the NBA President Olisa Agbakoba should be sanctioned by the NBA for commenting against the move by Uba calling on the Supreme Court to reverse itself in the judgment that insisted that Governor Peter Obi has not exhausted his tenure.

Obiekwe described as unfortunate and pure blackmail the claim that Agbakoba is against Andy Uba because he refused him a favour of putting his relation in power.
"Like the NBA president said, there must always be an end to litigation. Litigations are not meant to last forever. I don't see any reason any person should commence an attack on Agbakoba for speaking the minds of all lawyers in Nigeria.

I know and associate with the NBA that Uba's application before the Supreme Court asking it to vary its decision on Governor Peter Obi's tenure is sheer desperation and an attempt to ridicule the apex court. The action is in bad taste and should be condemned.

"Should we all keep quite and watch desperate politicians bring to odium the judiciary, an institution that is meant to serve the society and stem a resort to anarchy? No, we won't do that and Uba should therefore be called to order and told that he is too desperate and his desperation is a dangerous trend to rubbish the peace of this country by pouring contempt on the Supreme Court", he argued.
He also dismissed as baseless the call by Uba and Anambra PDP for the NBA to sanction Agbakoba for his position.

Obiekwe said Uba and his people should not have complained to NBA to punish Agbakoba when he actually spoke for all lawyers. "What is at stake is the law and order of the society. The judiciary has a duty to protect the society from anarchy just as the body of lawyers also has a duty to protect the judiciary from desperate incursions to erode its intergrity by desperate persons who want to be in power at all costs.

Agbakoba spoke for the NBA in that vein and should be commended. Nobody is interested in the propaganda and sentiments being introduced into the matter", he noted.
