The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to picket all the business concerns of the Ibru family across the country, should the family go ahead with the sack of The Guardian staff.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to picket all the business concerns of the Ibru family across the country, should the family go ahead with the sack of The Guardian staff. NLC stated this yesterday at a joint press conference with its affiliate members, including: the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the National Union of Printing, Publishing, and Paper Product Workers (NUPPPROW) at the NUJ press centre, Alausa Ikeja.
According to labour, the move for the decisive step became necessary because of the adamant nature of the management of The Guardian newspaper, especially the need for it to reverse its decision to sack all its workers over the agitation for improved welfare condition of service.
Speaking at the conference, the national chairman of NUJ, Ndagene Akwu through his deputy, Musa Ebomhiana revealed that the Ibrus have vowed never to recall all sacked workers, but assured, 'we shall rally all progressive forces against this invidious action by The Guardian management until all the members of staff are reinstated."
Enjoining The Guardian staff to be patient and remain resolute, the NUJ president recalled that The Guardian management shut out its workforce after demanding for an increment in their wages, recalling that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of organization, Mrs. Maiden Ibru and her husband Chief Alex Ibru have rebuffed all overtures, including shunning a meeting called by the Minister of Labour.
